£430,000 in grants for eye health research

Recipients of Bayer’s 2017 Global Ophthalmology Awards Programme have been announced

Research projects to understand and develop treatments for retinitis pigmentosa, retinal detachment, uveitis, diabetic retinopathy and age-related macular degeneration have received a boost through Bayer’s Global Ophthalmology Awards Programme.

The 12 recipients of the awards were announced at the European Society of Retina Specialists Congress in Barcelona, Spain on 11 September.

Successful ophthalmologists from UK, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Columbia, Japan, the Netherlands and the USA received more than £430,000 in funding to enhance the scientific understanding and clinical management of ophthalmic disorders.

Mital Shah of Oxford Eye Hospital received a Fellowship Project Award to understand cone degeneration in retinitis pigmentosa using high-resolution retinal imaging.

Bayer’s medical director of ophthalmology, Dr Jackie Napier, highlighted that there has been a UK recipient of the awards in each year since the programme’s induction six years ago.
