The Association of British Dispensing Opticians (ABDO) is encouraging optical industry professionals to sign up for its SEE (social, ethical and environmental) Summit, taking place on 3 October.

Speakers at the summit will include Munish Datta, director of sustainability for Specsavers, who will discuss the multiple’s colleague-powered sustainability strategy, and Thiago Gentile, a carbon consultant who will be speaking about how practices can measure, report and offset greenhouse gases.

A panel discussion will include ABDO’s sustainability campaign lead, Antonia Chitty, Centre for Sustainable Healthcare researcher, Rosie Hillson, and optometrist Sukie Woodhouse, whose independent practice has Green Mark accreditation and a Gold Award from ABDO’s Thinking Green campaign.

The event is supported by organisations across the optical sector, including the AOP, BCLA, FODO and the GOC.

It is the second time ABDO has run the SEE Summit. The inaugural event in 2021, ABDO president Daryl Newsome said, identified areas within the optical industry that need attention, created a free sustainability tool to quantify impact, and “demonstrated our community’s ability to collaborate on mutual objectives and deliver progress on mutual targets while at the same time reducing our carbon footprint and empowering others to do the same.”

Attendees at the SEE Summit 2.0 will also have the opportunity to ask questions and get advice on making their own businesses more sustainable.

Newsome added: “This year we look to have even more eye care practitioners and organisations taking part, to demonstrate and illustrate new and good practical tips for reducing your practices’, workshops’, or consulting rooms’ carbon footprint. And we will do this with an eye to the future and new products and behaviours.”

The SEE Summit will take place on 3 October, from 7-8.30pm. Register on the ABDO website.

Those who want to support the event or share their own environmental initiatives should contact ABDO via email.
