Dispensing opticians and optometrists are being encouraged to apply for 10 funded places on the Local Optical Committee Support Unit’s (LOCSU) Leadership Skills for Optical Professionals module.

The course, which is overseen by the Wales Optometry Postgraduate Education Centre, gives delegates the background knowledge and practical skills that will equip them to provide leadership in the optical sector.

Speaking at the National Optical Conference (14–15 November, Chesford Grange), course graduate and digital learning support officer for LOCSU, Simone Mason (pictured), highlighted that the online course includes practical days in London.

Topics covered include time management, personality types, influencing and negotiating.

Ms Mason shared that after each topic, course participants write a blog.

More than 60 people have completed the course since it was first piloted in 2011, Ms Mason said

“Many are now established in influential roles within LOCs,” she emphasised.

Those interested in applying for the 2019 course can find more information, including an application form, on the LOCSU website.

The deadline to receive applications is 4 January, with interviews to take place in the following week.
