An independent optometry group has partnered with a local school community in West Yorkshire to support a new reading initiative.

Valli Opticians has supported a new Read for Life initiative at the Honley Junior, Infant and Nursery School in Holmfirth which aims to create a culture of ‘reading for pleasure, reading for life.’

The initiative will provide opportunities for pupils to engage with books, competitions, clubs and events.

The project will also support the professional development of teachers and assist parents in their child’s reading journey.

Optometrist Moin Valli, owner of Valli Opticians, said: “We are delighted to support one of our local schools in this unique way.”

“We are aware that a child’s eye health and vision is directly related to their enjoyment of reading, which inevitably impacts their attainment. As a company, we are passionate about raising awareness of eye health and supporting the educational journey of children in our community, and we believe that the Read for Life initiative at Honley Junior, Infant and Nursery School aligns perfectly with this value,” he added.

In celebration of World Book Day (7 March), students were visited by players from rugby league club, the Huddersfield Giants, with the children able to read to the players and share their love of books.

The initiative was spearheaded by assistant headteacher, Sophie Wilkin, who explained that the launch activities formed “just the start of our plans.”

“Such generous financial and practical support from Valli Opticians will help us further our vision with ‘Love for learning, learning for life, life in all its fullness,’” she said.

Wilkin also thanked Friends of Honley Junior, Infant and Nursery School and the Honley Business Association for their support of the school.
