Optometrist José Gómez on practicing in different environments, the changing profession and his biggest challenge

Jose Gomez

Tell us about what you do:

I keep myself busy working in three different environments: primary care, hospital optometry and occasional university (the University of Bradford’s School of Optometry) teaching.

What is the most important change that you have witnessed in optometry during your career?

The technical advances occurred over the last 20 years. The arrival of the optical coherence tomography and ultra-widefield retinal imaging have transformed the profession forever.

What advice would you give newly-qualified optometrists?

Share the knowledge you gather as time goes along with your colleagues. It will make the profession stronger.

What is the biggest challenge that you have faced in your career to date?

Probably becoming a hospital optometrist back in 2008. After completing my PhD in 2007, I thought I was a good clinician. I don’t think that was totally accurate…

Who inspires you?

Hard working colleagues from York Hospital and the University of Bradford’s School of Optometry.

Tell OT about one of your hobbies:

Thanks to James Heron, cycling has become a very important part of my very little free time.

Tell OT something unexpected about yourself:

That’s not possible, I am totally predictable

What are you reading at the moment?

A book about ancient Rome, Los asesinos del emperador, by Santiago Posteguillo.
