It is with sadness that Optometry Today reports the death of Christine Harm, dispensing optician, contact lens optician and practice owner, at the age of 63.

Ms Harm owned Orrell Opticians in Ellesmere Port, alongside her husband John Harm. Having purchased the practice in 1999, the practice owners joined the Hakim Group in 2018.

Writing for the Association of British Dispensing Opticians’ Dispensing Optics, Ms Harm’s sister, a lecturer for ABDO College, Sally Bates shared: “Many people will remember Christine Harm FBDO (Hons) CL as a professional, straight-talking dispensing optician. Christine was this and so much more.”

Ms Bates outlined the professional achievements of Ms Harm, including becoming a Freeman of the City of London at the age of 21, and later a Liveryman, through the Worshipful Company of Spectacle Makers. In addition to training contact lens opticians, Ms Harm also became an ABDO council member, distance learning course tutor and dispensing practical examiner.

Describing Ms Harm as a “dedicated” eye care professional, Hakim Group CEO, Imran Hakim, paid tribute.

“First and foremost, Christine was a wonderful friend to so many across our family of practice teams as well as Hakim Group HQ. Christine epitomised professionalism, with her work ethic and resourcefulness, she was a real pleasure to work with and a role model for all those around her. Above all, she was immeasurably kind.

“I know she was busy planning her well-deserved retirement with John, and we are all utterly devastated at her loss.

“We are very proud that Christine was a part of the Hakim Group family, and she will be dearly missed by all of us. On behalf of everyone in the Hakim Group family, I would like to express my deepest condolences to John, Rob and family on the tragic loss of our dear friend Christine.

“Our thoughts will continue to be with her loved ones.”

Christine Harm died on 17 January aged 63. Ms Harm is survived by her husband, John, and her son, Rob.
