A passion for glaucoma and medical retina

Diana Ukaegbu (pictured) is an optometrist with a special interest in glaucoma and medical retina. She divides her time between hospital clinics and community practice.

What advice would you give your younger self?

To travel more while your responsibilities are relatively few in number, and submit a wildcard request to Wimbledon.

If you could switch career path, what would you choose to do?

I would become a tennis player or an astrophysicist.

What do you like most/least about your working day?

There is a good variety of ocular conditions seen throughout the week, so it’s rare to have a dull day. However, the more “interesting” or complex the clinic, the longer the day tends to run on.

How do you manage a work/life balance?

Generally, the aim is to switch off from ‘work’ outside of work. I try to plan at least one fun non-work-related activity per week.

What do you do to unwind?

I socialise, watch movies, play the guitar, or do anything creative.

You have won the OT lottery. What are the first three things you would do with the £1m jackpot?

I would spend some on family and friends, go on an impeccable holiday comprised of several holidays where I essentially travel most of the world, and donate some of the winnings to an inspiring organisation such as Great Ormond Street Hospital.

Do you have your next holiday booked? Where are you going?

Not just yet. The top three contenders are Japan, Thailand and Hawaii.
