Plymouth Optometry Society (OpSoc) hosted its end of year Eyeball last week (15 March) to celebrate the achievements of students and staff at the University of Plymouth.

Held at the New Continental Hotel in Plymouth, the event was attended by 190 people who enjoyed live music, casino tables and a three-course meal before an awards ceremony, which was sponsored by the AOP.

A raffle on the night raised £950 for Fight for Sight, which takes OpSoc’s fundraising total to almost £1200 for 2018–19.

Speaking about the event, president of Plymouth OpSoc, Luke McRoy-Jones, said: “The society has developed and grown immensely over the past couple of years, in line with the increasing student numbers on the optometry course at University of Plymouth. 190 attendees is 40 more than last year’s event and around double from two years ago.”

“We couldn’t have done this without our amazing industry sponsors, who we work with closely as a society. It’s obvious that these companies are keen to invest in and support the next generation of optometrists. Myself and our students are very grateful for their support,” he added.

Event sponsors included Specsavers, Boots Opticians, Vivid Optical and Capitol Student Accommodation.

Ophthalmic director at Specsavers Launceston, Rachel McClelland, who attended the event, said: “Specsavers is dedicated to providing the highest standard of eye care and this starts with investment in optometry students and their development.”
