Glasgow Caledonian University graduate, William MacKinnon, was presented with the OD Award for best student in optometric practice at his graduation ceremony.
The 22-year-old from Campbeltown was given a £500 cheque after posting the highest marks in clinical and practical assessments.
Speaking about receiving the award, he said: “It’s an honour to win the OD Award for optometric practice this year. I can’t wait to put the skills and knowledge I’ve acquired during my studies into practice.”
Explaining that he wishes to become an independent prescriber in the future, he added: “I know I have a long way to go to get there, but I think it’s important to set your goals high. For now, though, I’m concentrating on getting through my pre-reg years.”
Clinical services manager at Black & Lizars’, Graham Freeman, presented Mr MacKinnon with the award and said: “It’s fantastic to celebrate the next generation of optometric talent, and William is a very deserving winner of the prize.”
“Black & Lizars has always championed the highest standards of clinical professionalism, and by sponsoring this award, we hope to encourage all newcomers to the industry to share this goal,” he added.
Named in memory of Oscar Dewar Black, father of Black & Lizars founder, Colin Black, the OD Award has been given to Glasgow Caledonian graduates since 2011.
