Aston University PhD student Ipek Tugce was one of just five people in the UK to be awarded a grant to attend the Association of Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) conference in Hawaii last month.
Specialising in dry eye at Optegra Eye Sciences, Ms Tugce was successful in an abstract she submitted to the conference organisers on her work into the possible effects of light from an operating microscope for patients with dry eye.
The NIHR Biomedical Research Centre and UCL Institute of Ophthalmology awarded Ms Tugce a travel grant that allowed her to attend the conference and present her abstract.
Ms Tugce is in the third year of her studies at Optegra Eye Sciences as part of her PhD. She already has a Masters in Cell and Tissue Engineering from Keele University.
Speaking about attending ARVO, Ms Tugce said: “It was inspiring and motivational to attend the conference. I feel so honored to be awarded with the travel grant from more than 6000 posters.
“My poster was well received and I gained useful feedback about my research. I also had a chance to meet and discuss my research with the experts in the field – it was one of the best opportunities for me and my career, and allowed me to extend my knowledge and my connections.”
On completing her PhD, Ms Tugce hopes to remain in academia and specialise in ocular disease.
