Optometrist to cycle 64 miles for charity
Optometrist is raising funds for children’s charity
13 April 2018
Optometrist Andrew Elder Smith (pictured) is training to take part in the Bradford Big Dipper Sportive Challenge (29 July) to raise funds for Martin House Hospice for Children.
The charity bike ride will involve cycling a distance of 64 miles across hilly terrain between Bradford, Lancashire and Halifax. It will include cycling through Cragg Valle, the UK’s longest continuous uphill gradient.
Mr Elder Smith explained that he is preparing for the day by cycling whenever possible and is looking forward to the challenge of cycling up the steep hills.
Speaking about his enthusiasm for conquering hills, the optometrist told OT: “I really enjoy the challenge of not cycling on flat ground because you never know what you are going to get with rough terrain. Once you get to the top of a hill, you know you have conquered the difficult part and get to go back down again.”
“It will be a huge sense of achievement to raise funds for a charity that is dedicated to helping young people all while doing something that I enjoy and taking in the great scenery,” he added.
So far Mr Elder Smith has secured donations in support of the cause from far and wide, including members of the cycling community in Australia.
