Optometry undergraduates at Aston University had the opportunity to learn more about the variety of different lenses that they will gain access to on qualification when No 7 visited the optometry school last week.

The specialist contact lens company gave students insight into the fitting of mini-sclerals, the reasons for fitting ortho-k and the loyalty that RGP lenses can bring.

Lectures and workshops run by No 7 for second and third year students allowed them to try RGP lenses and to take advantage of the fitting skills of representatives that were on-hand.

During the day, No 7's professional services director, Katie Harrop, also gave talks on fitting keratoconics and patients with complex prescriptions, as well as guidance on prescribing ortho-k. 

Welcoming No 7 to the department, deputy pro vice-chancellor of the School of Health and Life Sciences at Aston University, Professor James Wolffsohn, said that the day was an “important” experience for students about delivering good contact lens care for patients. He also praised No7’s approach with the students and stressed that “optometry needs to continue to move forward with new developments.”

Commenting on the experience, second year optometry student, Hannah Omar, said: “I had been confused as to why anyone would wear RGP lenses, but now I can see why there is a place for them. The scenarios demonstrated – particularly about getting people back to driving showed how life changing they can be.”

Undergraduate, Zara Pervez added: “The presentations have motivated me to think about doing something different in the practice.  It would be good to build a rapport with the patient and for them to appreciate you for the eye care.”
