An optical assistant at Specsavers in Harborne is heading to Africa to compete in a 10km race to raise funds for Vision Aid Overseas (VAO).

Shackesha Piere will fly to Ethiopia in November to take part in the Great Ethiopian Run, which takes runners through the country’s capital city, Addis Ababa, which is set 8000 ft. above sea level.

Ms Piere hopes to raise a least £2600 for the charity, and is nearly halfway to reaching the target.

“So far I’ve raised £1000 through generous donations from customers, family and friends,” Ms Piere said, adding: “I’ve been given an amazing opportunity to support those in need in developing countries and I can’t wait for the race. It’s not going to be an easy task, but I am really looking forward to the once-in-a-lifetime experience.”

Staff at the Harborne branch of the multiple are currently planning a number of fundraising days to support Ms Piere in her fundraising mission.

Specsavers Harborne store director, Amit Madlani, said: “We really hope our customers and the residents of Harborne get behind Shackesha and support her on the journey over to Addis Ababa. VAO is dedicated to fighting poverty by transforming access to eye care in developing countries and Shackesha will be able to see first-hand how important this mission is.”
