Professor Fletcher’s career has spanned 70 years. He has been associated with City University London since his student days in the 1940s, which was followed by an academic career there for over 30 years. He was appointed to the first chair in optometry, outside of North America, in Europe in 1966 and he has trained over 10,000 students.
Invited to over 20 countries to lecture, Professor Fletcher has also advised governments and universities on establishing optometry courses in 10 countries including Nigeria, Ethiopia, Israel, Portugal, Iceland, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Scandinavia and Italy.
His 16 textbooks and 150 publications have contributed to his international status and he has been called to act as an expert witness in both High Court and Crown Court cases in the UK. His research interests have been diverse and he is the designer of several optometric instruments.
According to City University, he is remembered there for his ‘kindly care to three generations of students’ at the university where ‘his door was always open to anyone in need of advice.’

The event will feature presentations from former students, some of who are now professors of optometry and leading educators in Europe. It will also include the showing of a film of students at work in the early 1960s. Additionally, there will be a display of up to 50 archive photographs of the department.
