The University of Edinburgh is accepting applications for its September 2016 cohort for its online MSc in primary care ophthalmology course.
The part-time online Masters course provides flexible learning for optometrists, medics and other eye care professionals in a joint venture with NHS Education for Scotland (NES) Optometry Directorate and the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (RCSEd).
MSc programme director, Baljean Dhillon, professor of clinical ophthalmology, said: “We recognise the value of delivering learning alongside optometrists’ clinical experiences gained in their day job in their local environment. The MSc targets the future leaders in optometry and primary eye care who want to take their clinical decision-making skills and understanding of eye disease to a higher level.”
Professor Dhillon added: “I am familiar with the challenges of gaining postgraduate education, passing professional examinations and acquiring research experience whist holding down a full-time job.
“Our distance learning programmes have been designed with this in mind and allow students to enhance both their learning and professional profile ultimately for the benefit of patients with eye disease.”
Modules of the course have been designed and are delivered by consultant ophthalmologists and senior optometrists, using a clinical, problem-based approach. The modules feature illustrative multimedia ophthalmic case scenarios and discussion boards.
The course offers training in clinical decision-making and management of the ophthalmic patient. It also offers mentoring in research methodology to “deliver a piece of clinical research which is relevant to, and enhances, eye service quality.”
