EU Settlement Scheme: Government encourages businesses to remind employees of the deadline
With less than 50 days until the deadline to apply for the EU Settlement Scheme, the Government is encouraging employers to remind their eligible employees

The Home Office has encouraged employers to remind eligible EU employees of the approaching deadline for applications to the EU Settlement Scheme (EUSS).
Tuesday 11 May marked 50 days until the 30 June deadline for applications to be made to the scheme.
The Government has said that all EU, European Economic Area (EEA) and Swiss citizens and family members who were resident in the UK by 31 December 2020, should apply to the scheme in order to be able to continue to work, study and access free healthcare and benefits.
Encouraging employers to speak to their eligible employees, the Home Office shared: “As an employer it is not your responsibility to make sure your EU employees have applied, but you can play a role by reminding them of the approaching deadline and cascading information in the employer toolkit available on GOV.UK.”
Employers will not need to carry out retrospective Right to Work Checks on existing employees.
From 1 July, however, new EU, EEA and Swiss employees will need to demonstrate their right to work. The Home Office said this can be with either the pre-settled or settled status, or with a visa under the points-based immigration system.
As of the end of April 2021, there have been more than 5.4 million applications to the scheme and more than 4.9 million grants of status.
