Opticians branches out into 3D printing

An Ayrshire-based independent opticians has partnered with a local technology firm to explore how 3D printing technology can be used to create personalised eyewear that is designed to fit a patient’s individual requirements. 

Urquhart Opticians and Ivory Solutions have developed a prototype of the frames and are currently working on refining the design to ensure comfort and the “perfect” fit. 

The partnership was formed after co-owner of the opticians, Peter Telfer, met the founder of Ivory Solutions, Ian Ivory, at a local networking event. 

Commenting on the partnership, Mr Telfer, told OT that while the project is in its early stages, he is  thrilled to be working with another local business to explore how 3D technology can enhance its patient experience.

“When I met Ian earlier this year, I was fascinated to learn of the recent advances in 3D printing,” Mr Telfer said, adding: “We quickly realised the potential this technology could have for optometry. At Urquhart Opticians, we are proud to offer an exceptional range of frames from classic brands as well as exciting new designers. We’re equally proud to provide a personal fitting service, ensuring frames are comfortable and fit well, as well as complementing an individual’s style and colouring. 3D technology has the potential to greatly augment this with bespoke frames, created to fit the patient perfectly by considering every contour of your face shape.”  

Mr Telfer purchased Urquhart Opticians, which has four branches in Prestwick, Troon, East Kilbride and Glasgow, in 2014 with business partner Alistair Duff.
