The fact remains that the main income which sustains optometrist's salaries is the retailing of optical appliances; the golden egg for optoms has always been the protection of the function of refraction. Optoms are heading towards an orthoptist's way of working if they want to indulge in the gentler side of life, i.e. low salaries, but a respected role as part of an ophthalmologist's support group (including monitoring stable pathologies). Accept this, and you will be a happy optom; if you need to support a family, and have ambition, do something else.
