“Our job as independent retailers is to make sure that we give people the right reasons to buy glasses”

Jason Kirk, managing director of British eyewear brand Kirk & Kirk, talks to OT  at 100% Optical about eyewear trends, consumer needs and the cost of living

Showcasing its Centiles, Kaleidoscope and Centena collections at 100% Optical, Kirk & Kirk’s managing director, Jason Kirk, highlighted that the British eyewear brand is the only company in the world to handmake frames from acrylic.

“We use acrylic as it’s super light, really comfortable to wear and also you get these colours that you don’t get anywhere else, which is great for the opticians,” Kirk told OT.

Discussing current frame trends, Kirk believes, “people are certainly buying bigger glasses,” as well as “really expressive glasses, and colour is really in.”

“[People] are moving away from labels,” he added.

Kirk observes that “people are prepared to spend more money on glasses and they are prepared to be bolder.”

Commenting on the cost of living, Kirk acknowledged that opticians are being much more cautious, but shared that he is not sure that the consumer is being quite as cautious. While respecting the situation, Kirk emphasised, “our job as independent retailers is to make sure that we give people the right reasons to buy glasses.”

“As independents we need to get much smarter at communicating our points of difference,” he added.

Speaking about how the show had gone for the company, Kirk said: “Opticians are responding really well as it allows them to distinguish themselves from competitors, which is really what you need right now.”
