Eyewear manufacturer, De Rigo, has signed an agreement to acquire full ownership of Rodenstock Group’s eyewear division, as the latter seeks to focus on biometric ophthalmic lenses.

The transaction is expected to be completed towards the end of the second quarter of 2023.

The acquisition includes the two brands: Rodenstock Eyewear and Porsche Design Eyewear, which will be added to De Rigo’s product portfolio.

De Rigo suggested the acquisition forms part of its plan for further international expansion, aiming to reinforce its distribution platform in Central Europe, particularly in the German market, where it sees strong growth opportunities.

The group expects the acquisition to strengthen its sales network in Germany and international markets.

Maurizio Dessolis, executive vice chairman of De Rigo Vision, commented: “We are delighted to complement our portfolio of premium products with the prestigious Rodenstock brands, building a new champion in the eyewear business. We are confident that building on our global platform and network, we will be able to support the continued growth of the business and its brands.”

Rodenstock suggested the decision to sell the eyewear business is part of its journey to become a leading lenses med-tech company.

Anders Hedegaard, CEO of Rodenstock, said: “This strategic move serves our overarching goal of continuing Rodenstock’s growth as a med-tech company through innovation, commercial execution and digitalisation.”

“With De Rigo, we have found a buyer that will ensure business continuity for our eyewear business, and we look forward to our continued collaboration,” Hedegaard added.

Rodenstock will continue to invest in R&D capabilities, and its product and service portfolio, to strengthen its position in biometric lenses.

Marcus Desimoni, Rodenstock’s chief financial officer, added that a “clear focus on our B.I.G Vision glasses and our lens business will allow Rodenstock to continue its financial growth path.”
