Johnson & Johnson Vision Care has announced the launch of its Acuvue Oasys Max 1-Day contact lenses, as well as the Acuvue Oasys Max 1-Day Multifocal for presbyopia.

The new lenses will be available in the UK and Ireland from October.

The contact lenses are designed to address increasing demands on eyes, as new research finds that 81% of people in Britain who wear vision correction – either contact lenses or glasses – use at least five different digital screens per day, while more than two-thirds felt the increased role of screens in modern life was negatively impacting their eye comfort.

Jakob Sveen, managing director for Northern Europe and general manager for the UK and Ireland, shared that feedback suggested “patients are experiencing increased strain on their eyes as a result of longer days and increased time looking at digital devices.”

The Acuvue Oasys Max 1-Day contact lenses will present a new option to patients “experiencing this additional fatigue,” he said.

The new contact lenses feature proprietary TearStable Technology, which is designed to maximise tear-film stability for comfort, as well as OptiBlue a blue-violet light filter.

For patients with presbyopia, the multifocal lenses also feature Johnson & Johnson Vision’s Pupil Optimized Design technology, with parameters tailored to pupil size variations across age and refraction. This technology is used across the company’s Acuvue multifocal contact lenses.

John Buch, senior principal research optometrist for Johnson & Johnson Vision, commented that “life has changed since the start of the pandemic. With more time spent on digital devices and less time blinking.”

Buch shared that, through listening to the feedback of patients and eye care professionals, the company designed the new contact lenses “to address lifestyle requirements and help prevent dry and tired eyes from becoming normalised.”

The research found that 72% of glasses and contact lens wearers surveyed were concerned about shielding their eyes from blue light, with 80% suggesting they would be interested in purchasing contact lenses that would help to filter this.

Clinical trials of the Acuvue Oasys Max 1-Day found that nearly 90% of wearers reported all-day comfort and a reduction in tired eyes from digital devices, the company said.

Earlier this year, Johnson & Johnson Vision received CE Mark approval for the Acuvue Oasys Max 1-Day contact lenses.
