BL secures scleral CL business

Contact lens manufacturer Bausch + Lomb (B&L) has completed its acquisition of Innovative Scleral Ltd

The company, which has specialised in scleral contact lenses under the leadership of Ken Pullum since 1992, designs, manufacturers and supplies its products to hospitals and practices across the UK.

Scleral lenses are used for people with irregular corneas as a result of conditions such as keratoconus and keratoglobus, as well as following corneal transplant, traumatic injury and refractive surgery. The lenses are also used for therapeutic purposes such as protecting the cornea from conditions including trichiasis and dry eye.

Speaking about the acquisition, head of marketing at B&L in the UK and ROI, Amy Rothwell, said: “Bausch + Lomb is driven to seek new opportunities and advance the range of lenses available to practitioners and this acquisition provides more access to what has previously been seen as a specialist market.”

Innovative Scleral lenses will now be produce from B&L’s specialist gas permeable (GP) manufacturing plant in Hastings, Sussex.

Operations manager at the Hastings plant, Steve Graham, commented: “We are delighted to complement our highly successful Maxim CV mini Scleral lens with the addition of the well-established Innovative scleral range in order that we can provide a complete solution to the practitioner interested in fitting irregular corneas.

“Through our technical support team and our specialist GP lens professional relations consultant field team, we will support this and our entire GP lens portfolio by the provision of advice and technical training to practitioners throughout UK and Ireland.”
