The Macular Society has said it will focus on discussing financial support and benefits as part of its podcast in 2024, as the cost-of-living crisis “continues to bite in the new year.”

The society highlighted that people with sight loss experience increased expenses to help them in their daily lives.

The My Macular and Me podcast, run by the charity, will launch a new miniseries, Bitesize Benefits, to focus on the support available to people living with sight loss, how they help, and the process involved in making a claim.

The first episode will be released on 18 January, and the initial three episodes in the series will focus on Personal Independence Payment (PIP).

The series will be co-hosted by Emma Malcom, Macular Society interim director of services, and Colin Daniels (pictured above), working age and young people’s service manager.

Daniels said: “Understanding which benefits and financial support are available to people with sight loss can be a minefield, so we will be tackling that and breaking down what people may be entitled to.”

The series will consider perceived barriers in the application process, how to apply for the different available benefits, as well as the application, assessment, and how a decision is made.

“There are many additional costs involved for people living with sight loss, such as extra taxis or other transport fares and increased lighting bills at home, but there are benefits to help and we can show you how,” Daniels added.

The Macular Society highlighted that nearly 1.5 million people are currently affected by macular disease.

The podcast can be found online, as well as through podcasting platforms including Spotify, Amazon Music, Apple Podcasts, and Google Podcasts.
