Five leading sight loss charities have joined forces to hold a virtual event for anyone affected by sight loss in Northern Ireland.

The Macular Society has teamed up with Guide Dogs NI, RNIB Northern Ireland, Deafblind NI and Blind Veterans UK to host a Zoom event on 26 November.

The charities hope that the event will keep everyone up to date with the support services available while the COVID-19 pandemic continues.

Speakers will include the Macular Society’s senior regional manager, Karen Toogood, who will share the latest news from the charity and the support that it offers to all those affected by macular disease, as well as Deafblind NI’s outreach officer, Paula Meenan, and Fiona Joyce, RNIB Northern Ireland’s community connection co-ordinator.

The event will begin at 11am. Those who want to attend should email [email protected] for more information.

Ms Toogood said: “It’s really important that a collaborative approach is taken to ensure anyone with a sight condition is supported in Northern Ireland, and we are all committed to continuing to work together to provide as much support as possible, whilst the pandemic continues to disrupt people’s lives.”

She added: “In an unprecedented situation like this, health and wellbeing must always come first. However, it’s absolutely vital that everyone who needs our support continues to receive it. Although our face-to-face services have had to be suspended for the time being, we are still on the end of the phone and would strongly urge anyone to call us if they do need our assistance.”

The Macular Society provides a range of services available to anyone in Northern Ireland who is affected by macular disease, including the local Belfast Macular Society Telephone Support Group. A £40,000 grant from The National Lottery Community Fund means that the Society has been able to increase its range of remote services, including telephone befriending, while social distancing measures remain in place.
