Eye care charity Optometry Giving Sight (OGS) has recognised the achievements of three optometry students graduating from the School of Optometry at Mzuzu University in Malawi.

The medals were presented to recipients during their graduation ceremony last month.

Graduate Jaliff Chitseko was awarded the Dr John McCall Academic Medal for Outstanding Achievement, while Symon Chikumba received the Dr Bobby and Mrs Jayne Christensen Academic Medal for Excellence.

Thandiwe Munthali, who is one of only two women to have graduated from the course to date, was awarded the Dr Glenn and Mrs Clairice Ellisor Academic Medal for merit.

To date, 26 optometry students have graduated from the university, with a further 32 in the process of completing their studies. All of the graduates have or will be deployed to civil service in government hospitals.

The School of Optometry at Mzuzu University was established in 2009 with funding from OGS, the Brien Holden Vision Institute and Sightsavers. The programme is implemented by the Brien Holden Vision Institute, in partnership with the Department of Health, Mzuzu University and the Malawi College of Health Sciences.
