This consultant-led peer review session will use scenarios based on real-life patients from clinic. The cases will consider the management of acute presentations in the community and how to take a structured approach to diagnosing retinal abnormalities in order to establish the urgency and appropriateness of referral.

CPD

  • There are three interactive CPD points approved for this peer review
  • To be eligible for the CPD points you need to attend for the duration of the meeting and be able to participate in interactive polls
  • You will not be eligible for CPD points if you dial in to the audio only using a telephone
  • By attending this peer review you will fulfil the GOC’s peer review requirement for general optometrists

Learning outcomes

  • Practitioners will recognise how to take a structured approach to identify retinal pathology thereby guiding diagnosis and referral urgency
  • Practitioners will identify steps to build confidence in managing acute presentations in the community
  • Practitioners will recognise when and how urgently they should refer patients with retinal pathology to secondary care

Bishwanath Pal

Bishwanath PalBishwanath Pal is a senior retinal consultant at Moorfields Eye Hospital where he leads the largest medical retina training fellowship programme in the world. He is passionate about teaching and his current research projects involve treatment trials for wet macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy.

His special interests include management of wet and dry macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy/maculopathy, retinal vascular occlusions and central serous retinopathy, myopic maculopathy and treatment using newer anti-VEGF injections, retinal lasers, micropulse laser and PDT.

His private practice is based at Moorfields Private at City Road and New Cavendish Street.

Romil Patel

Romil PatelRomil Patel is a consultant ophthalmic surgeon specialising in cataract surgery and deals with both complex and routine cases as well as having a specialist interest in the use of multifocal lenses.

He is also a consultant in the emergency services based at Moorfields Eye Hospital in City Road. He commits a lot of time to training the next generation of surgeons and this is an area within his NHS practice that gives him great pleasure.

His private practice is based at Moorfields Private at City Road and New Cavendish Street.
