Johnson & Johnson Vision logoThe second in our series for the practice team, delivered in partnership with Johnson and Johnson Vision, will take a case record approach to explore the advantages, disadvantages and what to consider when choosing a progressive power lens, including an overview of lens types, the measurements required and how to take them, along with making appropriate frame choices.

The session will also outline what to do when the patient returns with concerns, from frame fitting issues to spotting problems with differential prism.

  • Dispensing progressive powered lenses

Elizabeth Bartlam qualified as a dispensing optician in 1998 and went to work for Anglia Ruskin University as a part-time lecturer. Moved to work for Aston University, and has been working for Aston University for 21 years, currently as a Teaching Fellow in Optometry.

Completed the Low Vision Honours in 2005 and completed a BSc (Hons) degree in Ophthalmic Sciences in 2010 and completed a Doctorate in Ophthalmic Sciences on the repeatability and reproducibility of visual field screeners in those with established visual field loss with a particular emphasis on the Esterman visual field test in 2019. Current main teaching duties are delivering lectures and seminars for the low vision element in the professional, occupational and low vision module, teaching within the final year clinical practice module in the dispensing and low vision clinics, teaching practical elements in certain first year modules and supervising elective projects. Other duties include being the Third Year Tutor and Examinations Officer and one of the team of Optometry Admission Tutors.

Outside of Aston University responsibilities include being the principal low vision examiner, a practical examiner, a theory examiner and practice visitor for the Association of British Dispensing Opticians. In addition to being a practice support visitor and a senior tutor for ABDO College and an external examiner for Anglia Ruskin University.
