A PhD project through the University of Bradford will examine mental wellbeing among optometrists and pre-registration optometrists in the UK.

The research follows a survey in Australia that found more than half were experiencing some level of burnout, while close to one in three (30%) were experiencing moderate to severe psychological distress.

Optometrist, Neil Retallic, who is leading the research, shared that alongside examining mental wellbeing among UK optometrists, the survey aims to identify potential triggers.

“Hopefully we can come up with some interventions that the profession, employers and individuals can use,” he shared.

“If we know more, we will know how we can support people,” Retallic emphasised.

The findings from the research will help to shape future guidance and support.

The survey, which is open to all practising UK optometrists and pre-registration optometrists, can be accessed online. It takes around eight minutes to complete and will close on 31 July.
