Moorfields Eye Hospital has opened a new hub at Stratford Broadway that is expected to provide around 70,000 appointments per year.

The hub is Moorfields’ second largest standalone site, after its City Road location. It will offer a range of diagnostic, consultant-led outpatient and surgical eye services for glaucoma, medical retina and cataracts.

The hub, which received additional funding from NHS England’s Target Investment Fund, incorporates a low vision clinic, a specialist pharmacy and Eye Clinic Liaison Officers for those facing sight loss.

Care will no longer be offered at two existing east London Moorfields sites – Mile End and Sir Ludwig Guttmann – with activity to be transferred to the new Stratford hub.

Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust chief executive, Dr Martin Kuper, shared that he was delighted to open the new “state-of-the-art facility.”

“The site also offers fantastic accessible transport for patients in East London. We will be able to offer local people more convenient outpatient appointments, new services and save them time on diagnostic testing,” he said.

The new hub will reduce time for diagnostic appointments from a couple of hours or more to 45 minutes.
