Glaucoma UK is offering up to £100,000 to healthcare professionals who are undertaking research into glaucoma and its related conditions.
The Health and Social Care Professionals Award 2024 is now open for applications, and optometrists are being encouraged to apply.
The announcement has been made to coincide with World Glaucoma Week (10–16 March).
The grant promises “an exciting opportunity for health and social care professionals to contribute to our understanding of this important condition.”
Joanne Creighton, chief executive of Glaucoma UK, said: “Glaucoma UK is dedicated to advancing research into glaucoma and related conditions.
“Recognising the crucial role of health and social care professionals in glaucoma care, it is an honour to present this unique award to support their valuable contributions.”
Research supported by the award can be laboratory or clinic-based, and should aim to advance understanding of glaucoma or its related conditions.
Patient-oriented research and research that is directly concerned with improving the management of glaucoma is welcome.
The GHOST Study, which will evaluate ocular structure and vascularity following glaucoma filtration surgery using optical coherence tomography, won the grant in 2023. It will follow patients over a three-year period, with cohort recruitment expected in 2024.
The study serves as the foundational research for Matt Roney, specialist optometrist at Liverpool University Hospital Foundation Trust and PhD student at the University of Liverpool.
Ophthalmologists are not eligible to apply for the 2024 award, the charity said.
