New bursary scheme for students starting out in optics

The WCSM is offering £1000 bursaries to students entering optics

Student studying

The Worshipful Company of Spectacle Makers (WCSM) Education Trust has announced a new scheme, which will offer bursaries of £1000 each to students entering optics.

The one-off awards will be available to prospective students who are about to embark on an optical course, including optical manufacturing, optical support, and degree courses in optometry and orthoptics. The aim of the bursary is to help “tip the balance” for those who may be undecided about entering an optical profession.

There are no specific conditions on how the bursary must be spent, rather it is aimed at assisting general student living costs, such as travel, textbooks and equipment. The WCSM trustees will invite one bursary recipient to the Court Luncheon of the WCSM, where they can discuss the success of the bursary, as well as meet established professionals.

Each application will be independently assessed and there is no restriction on age, gender, region or particular academic institution. However, bursaries are not available for post-graduate studies.
