Back in 2017, CooperVision presented a 60-minute lecture on myopia management called ‘Time to stop talking and start doing’. Six years on, this presentation will reflect on how far the profession has come, what we’ve learned and what’s yet to overcome to make sure that no myopic child is left untreated. Do you think that what you ‘see’ is a true representation of the visual world? It’s likely that the answer here is 'no' as we already know that we have an ‘invisible’ blind spot in each eye, but how far do you think this misrepresentation can go? This lecture will discuss how reliable the visual system really is, in terms of input and cortical processing, with a particular focus on the difference between 'vision' and 'conscious awareness' of sight. We will also consider the implications of individual differences in visual ability, how other factors can affect perception and discuss some clinically relevant examples, such as Charles-Bonnet Syndrome, blindsight, hemispatial neglect, and synaesthesia.
