More than 10 leaflets available on eye conditions, how to look after your eyes and the practice team

Optometrist giving advice on eye conditions header

Research reveals that 85% of 18-24 year-olds are unaware of the UK’s leading cause of blindness, age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and more than half have never heard of glaucoma, one of the most common sight-threatening eye diseases.1

In response, we’ve been highlighting our patient information resources and also launched three new patient leaflets on dry eye, blepharitis and meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD).

The new additions form part of our growing For patient section which now includes a suite of more than 10 patient leaflets and eye health videos. The resources are designed to inform the patient about their eye condition, provide the best advice for managing symptoms and offer tips on how to care for their eyes.

Geoff Roberson, AOP Professional Adviser, said: “For some conditions there are much higher risks attached to not getting that vital early diagnosis. For glaucoma patients the consequences of not beginning treatment, as early as possible can be devastating. We hope that these new resources will help patients to understand their condition and how to manage it day to day”.

As a free resource, our patient resources aim to support members in practice by:

  • Informing patients about their practice team
  • Offering a helpful take-away for patients that have been recently diagnosed with an eye condition
  • Providing simple one page documents that can be printed easily from a standard printer
  • Being a resource that AOP members can upload to their practice website
