AOP student members benefit from:

  • Free membership from your first year, until the end of your pre-registration year
  • University visits and presentations
  • Free bi-monthly copy of Optometry Today in print and online
  • Online educational revision content
  • Free legal support and representation
  • Support throughout your pre-registration period and OSCE exam
  • Special member-rate insurance products from our partner Lloyd & Whyte

Free student membership

The AOP invests in optometry students by offering free student membership from freshers’ week, until passing your OSCE exam. That’s over four years of free membership and lots of benefits.

What’s more, once you have qualified, we offer a reduced rate membership as a newly-qualified optometrist. Giving you the financial support you’ll need in your early career.

University visits and presentations

Freshers’ fairs - an introduction to the AOP

We aim to attend the freshers’ fair of every university in the UK where optometry is taught, providing you with the ideal opportunity to find out more about the AOP and the work we do and the benefits you’ll receive during your student membership and beyond.

Visits from the AOP’s legal team – preparation for professional life

Our legal team is a critical provider of legal support and advice to our 17,000+ members. They are intimately aware of the many types of legal and employment issues which affect professional optometrists practising across the UK today. This makes them perfectly placed to help prepare and protect you now, and in the years to come.

The AOP legal team present to final year students at most UK universities. The presentation gives insight into the legal issues that may arise as a practising optometrist, with opportunities to discuss the issues and ask questions.

Free bi-monthly copy of Optometry Today in print and online

Our award-winning bi-monthly journal packed with news, features, educational and student specific content, normally priced at £10 per issue, is delivered to you for free.

Online educational revision content

Support your learning and revision, with access to all of the CPD resources that our qualified members receive, including our popular Optometry Today OT skills guide videos, which feature guided demonstrations of clinical procedures.

Free legal support and representation

Student members benefit from legal support from our in house team, even during your time at university.

This is important because UK student optometrists are required register with the GOC, and as such may be investigated and assessed in regards to their fitness to practise. We have assisted students in the past that have been brought before the GOC’s Fitness to Practise Committee. Should you ever find yourself in that situation, you’ll want our team of legal experts firmly by your side, supporting you at every step.

Support throughout your pre-registration period and OSCE exam

Your pre-registration stage will come around quickly and may seem like a daunting prospect, but we have advice and services to help support you throughout the whole process, from finding a placement, to passing your OSCE and qualifying. As a student member, you’ll be able to access, for free:

Special member-rate insurance products through our partner Lloyd & Whyte

We have a range of exclusive member benefits provided by our partners Lloyd & Whyte, including travel insurance and financial advice offered to you at competitive rates.
