AOP statement in response to Specsavers optical practice video
AOP Chief Executive expresses “deepest concern” at apparent breach of routine practice restrictions
The AOP has expressed “the deepest concern” at a video that shows an optical practice apparently operating in breach of the current restrictions on providing routine eye care.
The video, which was circulated widely on social media on 4 June, appears to show staff at a Specsavers optical practice explaining how they are delivering routine eye care to patients, in contravention of current government guidance.
In the video, a staff member states that they “stole” a patient from another practice that is acting in compliance with government rules by not being open for routine eye care.
The General Optical Council has confirmed that it has received several complaints about the video, and its fitness to practise team is considering the matter in line with its rules and legislations.
AOP Chief Executive, Henrietta Alderman, said: “The video on social media is of the deepest concern. We have been contacted by many members who are understandably appalled at what they have seen. This is a critical moment for the optical sector, and it’s vital that we all follow the rules, which are there to protect public health and put the safety of our patients and staff first.
“The claims made in the video about “stealing” patients and revenue from other practices will concern everyone in the sector, especially when so many dedicated optical staff are without work or being asked to accept lower rates.
“This is a single example of things going wrong. We very much hope it is an isolated incident – and that Specsavers will ensure that is the case.”
