AOP responds to blue light coverage

The AOP believes that there is currently no evidence to suggest that artificial blue light can cause permenant damage to the eye

The Association of Optometrists (AOP) is responding to recent coverage on the damage caused to eyesight by LED streetlights.

The AOP, which represents over 80% of practising optometrists, is concerned that the coverage is misleading and may cause undue concern among the public.

In the recent coverage, Public Health England is quoted as claiming that blue light causes retinal damage.
The AOP believes that there is insufficient clinical evidence to suggest this.

AOP spokesperson and optometrist, Farah Gatrad, comments: “While looking at artificial blue light for prolonged periods can increase eye strain and affect sleep patterns, there is currently no evidence to suggest that it can cause permanent damage to the eye, including the retina, or increase the risk of eye conditions. The level of exposure from devices is significantly less than the exposure from natural daylight.

If you are concerned about your eyes or your vision, your optometrist should be your first port of call. They can recommend solutions to help reduce discomfort and offer advice regarding your eye health.”
