Optometrists and dispensing opticians have a professional duty of candour.

The General Optical Council (GOC) have issued a joint statement from the eight chief executives of statutory regulators of healthcare professionals confirming the existence of the duty of candour.

The statement is clear that optometrists and dispensing opticians must be open and honest with patients when something goes wrong with treatment or care that causes, or has the potential to cause, harm or distress.

If you find yourself in a situation when care has gone wrong, please contact our legal and regulatory department who will assist you on how to respond quickly, effectively and truthfully.
