A telehealth project that resulted in a reduction of referrals to secondary care has been recognised at the Health Business Awards.

Moorfield Eye Hospital’s remote referral system received the Telehealth Award at the event.

The project is a collaboration between hospital eye services, community optometry and digital health platforms.

Research on the impact of the system found that 54% of community optometrist referrals to eye hospital were avoided.

Consultant ophthalmic surgeon and head of telemedicine at Moorfields, Dawn Sim, said she was happy that the remote referral system has been recognised for making a significant contribution to the NHS.

“This project represents the importance of collaborative working to deliver a more efficient outpatient system and we hope more patients can benefit from this in the future,” she highlighted.

The awards ceremony was hosted by Paul Sinha, from ITV’s quiz show The Chase, at St Paul’s Hotel in London on 5 December.
