The Association of British Dispensing Opticians will no longer retain a London office following the decision to close its headquarters at 199 Gloucester Terrace.
ABDO, the Federation of Manufacturing Opticians (FMO) and the Federation of (Ophthalmic and Dispensing) Opticians (FODO) have agreed to sell the shared premises.
ABDO confirmed that most headquarter functions would transfer to ABDO’s National Resource Centre (NRC) in Birmingham, with remaining activities carried out at Godmersham Park in Kent.
A decision about what to do with the proceeds of the sale would be made by the ABDO board, with the intention that the move would provide extra revenue during the challenging time of the COVID-19 pandemic.
ABDO general secretary Tony Garrett said that having a joint headquarters had worked well for the three organisations.
“However, times change and we have seen with the advent of COVID-19 that having a London office with all the associated costs is no longer necessary. With the NRC and Godmersham we have all the resources we need to fully support all of our members,” he highlighted.
