Huddersfield optometry students set up clinic at shopping centre

Sight tests and other healthcare services were provided to Christmas shoppers

First-year optometry students from the new University of Huddersfield course provided sight checks to shoppers at Queensgate Market last week (17 December).

A ‘surgery’ was set up with other healthcare students to allow members of the public to access services while doing their Christmas shopping.

People who did not meet screening criteria were referred to their local optometrist for an eye examination.

Head of the optometry and vision sciences department at the University of Huddersfield, Professor John Siderov, said: “Getting students interacting with the public at an early stage of the course helps with the development of the soft-skills. Our students responded very positively to the experience and we are looking forward to continuing collaboration with other healthcare students at Huddersfield.”
