WCSM celebrates students’ successes

The company presented certificates and welcomed new freemen at its annual presentation ceremony

The Worshipful Company of Spectacle Makers (WCSM) hosted its annual presentation ceremony at Apothecaries’ Hall in London on 17 October.

Certificates and diplomas were awarded to students from independent practices and the first group of spectacle maker apprentices from Specsavers were celebrated.

The WCSM welcomed 16 new freemen, including: Anna Horwood, professor of orthoptics at Reading University; Dr Sunni Patel, business unit director of eye care at Allergan; and CEO of Moorfields Eye Charity, Robert Dufton.

Speaking at the event, master of the WCSM, Huntly Taylor, said: “How we learn and how we train is changing fast. School is for life and we hope the successful candidates today will carry on learning and develop their own hugely rewarding career. With an ageing population and 50% of the world predicted to be myopic by 2050, there is plenty still to be done.”
