Lesley Longstone has been appointed chief executive and registrar of the General Optical Council (GOC) on a permanent basis.

Having joined the regulator on an interim basis in September last year, Ms Longstone said she was “delighted to be staying.”

Speaking about the role, Ms Longstone said: “I will continue the work I have done over the last six months to deliver our regulatory functions and education reforms.

“It is also time for us to develop our next strategic plan, to take effect from 2020. I look forward to working with my colleagues at the GOC and many partners and stakeholders to develop our plans for the future, ensuring that the GOC continues to maintain public safety in a fast-changing world.”

The GOC also confirmed that it has extended the contract for its interim director of education, Dr Subo Shanmuganathan, who will remain at the regulator until at least March 2020 to lead the Education Strategic Review.
