Not just a DO

A new campaign has launched to highlight the wider roles of the practice team

Not Just a DO campaign

The Association of British Dispensing Opticians (ABDO) has launched a new campaign to raise the profile of work carried out by dispensing and contact lens opticians.

The Not just a DO campaign showcases a different member of the practice team every week, starting with ABDO’s sub-regional lead, performance lead for Primary Eyecare and digital learning and support officer for LOCSU, Simone Mason (pictured).

Head of communications for ABDO, Antonia Chitty, said: “The campaign arose from the feeling that dispensing opticians can be undervalued as a member of the practice staff. We would love the wider professions to understand the full benefits of having a dispensing optician on your team.”

Dispensing opticians are well known for their expertise in frames and lenses. The campaign showcases specialisms in fitting children and assisting people with low vision, as well as being involved in areas, such as research and clinical governance.

The campaign highlights that as well as fitting contact lenses, contact lens opticians are now able to take part in minor eye conditions schemes once trained to do so.

ABDO is calling for members of the practice team to get involved using the #NotJustaDO hashtag and share their story on social media.
