100% Optical: RCA eyewear design competition opens
RCA students have been asked to design a frame that functions as a health aid and makes a style statement
16 August 2018
The theme of the 100% Optical and Royal College of Art (RCA) eyewear design competition for 2019 will be 2020 Vision in Motion.
Judges have asked students at the college to design a frame that helps them "see and be seen" as it gets closer to the landmark year of 2020.
The competition has been widened to include viewfinders or virtual reality headsets, with entrants encouraged to think about new design processes, lens technologies and embedded technology.
Entrants will produce a preliminary model of their frame, which should function as a health aid or protection, as well as make a style statement.
The deadline for entries is 22 October, and students must include a sketchbook of ideas, drawings, tests and technical notes, as well as a model made from card or found materials.
A judging session will take place in October where six finalists will be selected by eyewear experts and engineers. The finalists will showcase their frames 100% Optical, which will take place at ExCeL London on 12–14 January 2019. The winner will receive £1000.
