The Directorate of Optometric Continuing Education (DOCET) has launched a new online learning module which expands on its Ageing eye series. The free educational tool covers Adapting the route – domiciliary eyecare and is accredited for optometrists, with three interactive CET points available.
During the module, contributors take viewers through a domiciliary eye examination. It also provides advice, useful facts and top tips on examining elderly patients in their own homes or nursing homes. The programme covers key aspects such as effective communication, legal requirements, necessary equipment and adapting clinical techniques.
Chair of DOCET, Rob Hogan, said: “Older patients can have increasingly complex issues with their vision but, for many, visiting their local practice is not an option. We hope that this timely programme will not only be helpful to those optometrists already carrying out domiciliary visits, but will also encourage others to consider providing this valuable service.”
He added: “Optometrists can play an important role in ensuring that patients unable to visit their local practice are not at a disadvantage and that they receive the highest possible standards of professional eye health care, whether that is in their own homes or in a care home.”
