The University Hospitals of Derby and Burton have introduced a disposable headscarf that is available to operating theatre staff.
It is believed to be the first NHS trust in the UK to offer a sterile hijab to clinicians, avoiding the potential contamination risk of cotton headscarves.
The hijab was designed by a former Royal Derby Hospital medical student, Farah Roslan.
Dr Roslan said: “I am so happy my vision has become a reality and that these headscarves are now available for all of the staff."
She was mentored by colorectal surgeon, Gill Tierney, while working at Royal Derby Hospital.
Ms Tierney highlighted that the lack of disposable headscarf options for staff working in operating theatres is a “silent issue” across the UK.
“I don't think it has been formally addressed. [Introducing sterile headscarves] hasn't cost much and hopefully the effect will be enormous,” she said.
