The eye hospital has named the new medical director of its Dubai arm

Moorfields Eye Hospital in Dubai

Dr Ammar Safar has been appointed medical director of Moorfields Eye Hospital Dubai.

A consultant ophthalmologist and vitreoretinal surgeon, Dr Safar is also a specialist aeromedical medical examiner approved by the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA).

In the role, Dr Safar will be leading a team of 20 permanent and visiting consultant ophthalmologists with the aim of growing the hospital's reputation as a centre for excellence in the Middle East and Africa.

Dr Safar completed his medical training in Syria before moving to the US and specialising in ophthalmology.

He has received a number of awards during his career, and was the inaugural recipient of the Martha Bentley Wood Chair of Ophthalmology at the University of Arkansas.

Commenting on the appointment, chief executive of Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Trust, David Probert, said: “Moorfields is delighted to announce this new appointment in an important clinic area and in the management of the hospital's clinical team. Dr Safar brings a tremendous range of expertise and will add considerate additional experience to our consultant-led team and approach to patient treatment and care.”
