A royal tour

The Duchess of Cornwall tours Moorfields Dubai’s new paediatric ophthalmology unit

Camilla visits Moorfields Dubai

The Duchess of Cornwall has toured Moorfields Eye Hospital in Dubai’s new paediatric ophthalmology facility, now based in the Al Jalila Children’s Speciality Hospital.

Showed around the new facility by the chief executive of the Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, David Probert, the pair were also joined by the chair of Dubai Healthcare City Authority, Her Royal Highness, Princess Haya Bint Al Hussein.

During the tour, the royal guests were shown around the new paediatric ophthalmology unit and briefed on the services that are offered.

Moorfields Eye Hospital Dubai and the Al Jalila Children’s Hospital entered into partnership at the end of October with the signing of an agreement that would see Moorfields provide the paediatric ophthalmology services at the children’s hospital.

The relocation of Moorfields’ current paediatric ophthalmology team and services to the children’s hospital is designed to provide “comprehensive ophthalmic care under one roof, and will contribute to Al Jalila Children’s vision to be recognised as one of the top 10 paediatric hospitals in the world in years to come,” Moorfields explained.

Speaking about the new partnership, managing director of Moorfields Eye Hospital Dubai, Mariano Gonzalez, said: “Moorfields is committed to playing a significant role in the development of Al Jalila Children’s ophthalmology services. We look forward to working together with an entity that shares our established vision and values, and our focus on providing world-class care for patients.”

He explained: “The Moorfields Eye Hospital Dubai team of paediatric ophthalmologists, orthoptists, optometrists, and nurses will be based in outstanding new facilities to provide support for parents and families, as we have been for the last nine years in Dubai.”

Moorfields Eye Hospital Dubai will continue to provide all other ophthalmology services from its current location at the Al Razi Medical Complex in Dubai Healthcare City

Mr Probert said: “It was an honour to be in the presence of the Duchess and HRH Princess Haya in the new Moorfields paediatric ophthalmology area at Al Jalila Children’s Hospital and to present this exciting new collaboration, which will ensure access to world class eye treatment and care for children in the community and wider region.”
