MP for Leicester South, Jon Ashworth

MP for Leicester South, Jonathan Ashworth, has been named new Shadow Health Secretary.

He was promoted from Shadow Minister Without Portfolio into the new position on Friday (7 October) following a shadow cabinet reshuffle by Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn.

Mr Ashworth takes over the role from Diane Abbott, who has been promoted to Shadow Home Secretary.

As a former adviser to past Labour Prime Minister Gordon Brown, Mr Ashworth became a Labour MP for Leicester South in May 2011. He was named a member of Labour's National Executive Committee in July 2013, before being appointed deputy campaign chair responsible for liaising with candidates in the run-up to the general election campaign in July 2014. In September 2015, Mr Ashworth was made Shadow Minister Without Portfolio.
