GOC suspends optometrist

The GOC has sanctioned a Huddersfield-based practitioner who presented inaccurate records while training as a student optometrist

The General Optical Council (GOC) has suspended Husnal Murtza (GOC registration number 01-30787) for three months in relation to presenting incorrect records as evidence during his assessment as a student optometrist.

A fitness to practise committee decision stated that Mr Murtza inappropriately and dishonestly presented inaccurate records as evidence for his Stage 2 assessment.

However, the committee took into account the relatively young age of Mr Murtza at the time, written reflections which show “considerable insight” into the misconduct and testimonials that attested to the dishonesty being out of character.

The committee considered there was a low risk of repetition of the behaviour.

In considering the length of the suspension, the committee carefully considered aggravating and mitigating factors in the case.

“The committee decided that the public interest would be sufficiently protected by the substantive sanction of suspension for three months,” the decision stated.
